The Abercarn Welfare Grounds held sports meetings which sometimes included bicycle races. In September 1934 there was a ½ mile Open race and a 1 mile Open Handicap race. The meeting also included attempts by Ronald Walker, the British heavyweight champion weight-lifter of 1931-1933 to beat various records. He failed on all the record attempts except one, setting a new British record for lifting 171 pounds left hand swing.
On July 1946 a Programme of Victory Sports was held which included bicycle races: ¼ mile handicap (5 heats), The ½ mile Welsh Cycle Championship Scratch race and a 5 miles scratch race. The event concluded with a cycle polo match.
